We left Jamaica yesterday and have been at sea for 24 hours now. The day was good as we had a very good weather window to round the east point of Jamaica. We found 1.5 - 2 knots of current against us but that’s what we expected so we kept doing 6.5-7 knots through the water and not even 5 knots over ground.
We did get more and more protection from Haiti and at sundown we were directly west of Navassa Island. This is when the thunder and lightning began and that went on all night. We did find a favorable current as well as south wind which we used to make up some time and do 7 knots over ground to the north-east.
At 3am the wind died and a big swell from the north came through. I have no idea where that comes from but it’s still here. We had to take the sails down as they were flapping violently during rolling. We expect this motoring in a washing machine to last into the early afternoon before we find a north-east wind that can take us through the passage into the Atlantic Ocean to Great Inagua, Bahamas.
