Today we had an easy 19 nautical mile trip from Isla Pinos to Achutupu. Within the hour we had 6 ulu's with Kuna indians visiting us and trying to sell mola's and foodstuff. Upon our approach, there were so many ulu's with sails that it gave us the impression of a regatta.
The east-entrance we navigated is very narrow and between steep reefs. By that time bigger outer-reefs are already providing shelter so you arrive in calm water. To see how accurate the charts and way points in the 3rd edition of the Eric Bauhaus guide are, Josie did a computer & autopilot entry while I was ready at the wheel to take over if needed. I never touched the wheel because the way points were 100% accurate!
Only now I realize that I'm writing this in English instead of Dutch... I don't want to start over so I'll just continue in English. In the previous (Dutch) posting I wrote something about Kuna Yala and the Kuna indians. I will add some to that here and in the next postings as we learn more;
There are about 55000 Kuna indians today. That is only 10% of the population as it was before the Spanish conquistadores arrived. Today, the Kuna's export coconuts, lobster, crabs and octopus. Coconuts used to be the official means of exchange, now replaced by the US dollar. The woman produce mola's, a kind of handicraft that involves a lot of hand-stitching and multiple layers of cloth which are cut into patterns/designs. They are sold to tourists and known worldwide although we never heard of them before.
The Kuna woman here are good ulu-sailors! Before they build a pipeline from the mainland and a water tower on the island, they used to sail to the mainland river to get water and do the laundry. Also, Achutupu used to be two islands and was filled to make it one island (not only the Dutch know how to do that ;-) but officially there are still two villages on the island. There is a tiny island nearby called Uagitupu with a "resort". We're gonna check it out tomorrow as we heard we can get cold beers and a nice fish lunch there!
Greetings from the San Blas! Nick & Josie
